Are Userneeds’ Finnish panel members more polite when they receive a gift?

June 24th, 2020

Do you know the feeling when you open a gift and politely say thank you and show your gratitude even though you are aware, you are never going to wear this piece of clothes or use this big plate? Some people might exchange the gift or hide it in the closet and only use it when the person the gift came from are coming over. Others might rewrap it and give it to someone else. There are many ways to handle a situation like this. At Userneeds we found it interesting to ask our panel members the question: “Have you ever received a gift, then rewrapped it and given it to someone else?”

We receive gifts on different occasions during the year and some gifts are better than others. We are excited to see if we get what we have wished for at Christmas or our birthday. But sometimes we get something that is not on our wish list and then we can get a little disappointed even though it is the thought that counts. How we handle a situation like this can be different from person to person. Some exchange it, some hide it in a closet, and some might rewrap it and give it to someone else. We have set up a quick poll and asked our panel members: “Have you ever received a gift, then rewrapped it and given it to someone else?”

The result from the quick poll shows that the Irish panel members are more likely to give a gift to someone else, which first was meant to be to themselves. 55 percent of the Irish panel members have received a gift, then rewrapped it and given it to someone else. Further, 27 percent have done this more than once. In Norway, 37 percent answer yes to the question, 34 percent in Denmark, and 33 percent in Sweden. Sweden is the country where second most of the panel members have rewrapped a gift and given it to someone else more than once (18 percent).

The Finnish panel members are more polite compared with the other panels. Only 15 percent have received a gift, rewrapped it, and given it to someone else. And only 8 percent have done it more than once. A whole of 81 percent in Finland answer “No, never” to the question asked in the quick poll. In the other panels this percentage is between 40 percent (Ireland) and 59 percent (Denmark).

Thereby, it turns out that there is a tendency that the Irish panel members are more likely to give a gift to someone else even though it was meant for themselves. At the same time, the Finnish panel members are more likely to be polite and not do such a thing.
